Words by: Morgan Kastner Photos by: Sean Richardson Economics is more than analyzing the stock market. Just ask economist and LSU professor Naci Mocan. Dr. Mocan’s research doesn’t revolve around GDP, recessions or unemployment rates, instead it focuses on the economics of our everyday decisions and how that ultimately affects labor and health, or other hot issues like crime, corruption and vengeance. In his 2017 TEDxLSU talk, Mocan reflects on how feelings of hate and fear can trigger discrimination and result in serious economic consequences. Diving even further into this idea, he asks, “can economic situations have an effect on those feelings of hate and fear and how do those feeling affect discrimination?” Check out Naci’s 2017 talk below to learn what he discovered about the economics of discrimination.
