Ideas worth spreading

#PhotoFriday - 9.29

9/29/2017

On Fridays, we'll share images from behind the scenes of TEDxLSU. Enjoy!
Each year, the TEDxLSU organizers are joined by a group of passionate volunteers to make sure good ideas in our community are shared on our stage. A few weeks ago, we kicked off the 2018 volunteer season with a day-long retreat. Our volunteers help with projects like graphic design, photo & video, public relations, creative writing, and much more!  Learn more about our volunteer opportunities.

Each Friday, we'll share images from behind the scenes of TEDxLSU. Enjoy!
This past weekend, a few members of our organizing team traveled to Birmingham to meet with other TEDx organizers from across the Southeast. While they learned a ton, they also had quite a bit of fun, too!

How Your Social Media can Lead to Scientific Discovery

Don’t think a Facebook or Instagram post can make a difference?
Just ask LSU graduate student
Ahsennur Soysal.

Soysal’s research as an environmental science student
focuses on “citizen science,” the collaborative collection of data
by citizens to help study the natural world. Soysal’s specific
research focuses on foxes and their behaviors and habits.
By engaging the community through the Facebook page
Fox Finders
of Baton Rouge or through the hashtag #findfoxlsu,
Soysal and her research team are able to collect larger amounts
of data on fox sightings in the community.

The idea behind using social media is to get an all-hands-on-
deck approach to researching foxes in the area. Soysal and her
team don’t have to go out and capture the animals to study them, since the community, as social media users, are providing the content for this study.

By doing this, Soysal and her team have discovered a whole ecosystem of foxes right here in Baton Rouge!

Find out more by watching Ahsennur Soysal’s 2017 TEDxLSU talk below.

On Fridays, we'll share images from behind the scenes of TEDxLSU. Enjoy!
Our LSU student volunteers hold table sits in Free Speech Alley to make spread the news about TEDxLSU. They always think up creative ways to promote the event and our speakers!
