Dr. Tiffany Stewart: “Culture says it’s how we look – What if it’s how we feel?”

Dr. Tiffany Stewart is on a mission to demolish the concept of body image reflecting physical health. Stewart was a competitive gymnast for 10 years, and faced adversity when trying to meet the sports' expectations, both the way her body looked and performed. After a series of injuries forced her to think of her body’s function rather than its form, she realized just how significant of a connection there is between the two often competing viewpoints.

After finishing college and obtaining a PhD in psychology from LSU, she formed the company Body Evolution Technologies (BET). BET serves as a way to combat eating disorders using mobile apps and online gaming programs. She currently serves as an associate professor at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. She received various grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense to research health nutrition in female collegiate athletes and soldiers in the military.

With this much expertise in the field, the TEDxLSU team was thrilled she agreed to give a talk at the 2017 event.
